Community Service Programs

Clubwomen are encouraged to select a Program of Work wherein their interests lie. It doesn’t have to be just one. Our Community Service Programs (CSP) create a focus for our activities and resources.

THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!!!

Arts & Culture icon Arts & Culture
The study of art and culture enriches the human experience. Art education improves problem-solving and critical thinking skills, builds focus and perseverance, and nurtures creativity, confidence, and collaboration. Cultural awareness promotes effective communication and profoundly increases the ability to appreciate and enjoy a variety of new people and experiences.

Project Ideas:

  • Use an artistic event to raise funds to sponsor local community art, theatre, and cultural programs.
  • Host an art supply drive within your club.
  • Help build, paint, and decorate a Little Free Library.
  • Youth writing and art contests
  • And Many More!

Civic Engagement and Outreach icon Civic Engagement & Outreach
The GFWC Engagement and Outreach CSP reminds GFWC members that each of us is a part of a larger society and is responsible for undertaking actions that will create a better quality of life and foster a sense of community – locally, regionally, nationally, and globally. The four “broad strokes” of this effort include Citizenship, Crime Prevention, Safety, and Disaster Preparedness; the Needy, Hungry, and Homeless; and our Military Personnel and Veterans.

Project Ideas:

  • Work together to “Get Out the Vote!”. Encourage others to register and vote, provide information about early voting or polling locations and times, and offer transportation if needed.
  • Support and thank local Police and Fire Departments for keeping the community safe.
  • Collect items to donate to homeless shelters.
  • Organize club day of service at a local food pantry and donate essential goods.
  • And Many More!

Education and Libraries icon Education & Libraries
GFWC members promote education in both children and adults. We aim to help others, while we also continue to learn. Projects in the Education CSP are designed to foster schools and other education institutions and opportunities and promote literacy, libraries, and the love of a good book. Through these efforts, we encourage the growth of individuals and communities at home and worldwide.

Project Ideas:

  • Establish a Litte Free Library in your community, choosing an area where books are scarce.
  • Organize book-themed events, such as a book walk, book fair, book bingo, book drive/swap, book reading challenge, or book club of “reading buddies”.
  • Support schools, educators, and students with donations of school supplies, and playground equipment, or fund field trips for underserved students.
  • Advocate for reading opportunities for children and adults with special needs.
  • And Many More!

Environment icon Environment
GFWC encourages becoming stewards of the earth by working to preserve the world’s resources, protect wildlife and domesticated animals, live sustainably, beautify our communities, and enjoy nature.

Project Ideas:

  • Join Arbor Day Foundation and receive ten free trees to plant or donate ten trees to be planted in a threatened rain forest or one of our National Forests.
  • Support wetland conservation and learn how wetlands are a deterrent to both flooding and drought.
  • Educate club and community members about the importance of pollinators and how to create healthy habitats where they can thrive.
  • Adopt-A-Street or Adopt-A-Highway in your local community and host clean-up events throughout the year.
  • And Many More!

Health and Wellness icon Health & Wellness
The human body, mind, and spirit comprise our health and wellness. To improve our well-being, we must address three key components: nutrition, disease prevention, and physical and emotional care. This CSP aims to explore the various opportunities for awareness and advancement of each of these vital areas.

Project Ideas:

  • Share information with club and community members about making wise food choices.
  • Share information about the early signs of symptoms of diabetes in children and adults
  • Share information about the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
  • Educate, advocate, and/or donate during Mental Health Awareness month in May.
  • And Many More!

Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention icon Signature Program – Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention
Our mission is to increase awareness of and help prevent the widespread occurrence of domestic/sexual abuse and violence against women of all ages in our communities. We do this by working with various established organizations and programs, supporting their existing activities, and initiating education opportunities for club members and local citizens about the complex issues surrounding domestic/sexual abuse and violence. We work to support the agencies that help both the victims and the survivors of all ages in these areas:

  • Intimate Partner Abuse
  • Teen Dating Violence
  • Campus Sexual Assault
  • Human Trafficking
  • Child Abuse
  • Elder Abuse
  • Military Sexual Assault
  • Violence Against Native American Women
